వాడపల్లి ఒకప్పుడు "ఓడపల్లి" అనే పేరుండేది. సంస్కృతంలో దాన్నే "నౌకాపురి" అన్నారని స్థానికుల కథనం. వాడపల్లి, వెంకటేశ్వరస్వామి వారి ఆలయం నిర్మింపజేసింది. గొప్ప భగవద్ భక్తుడని కీర్తివహించిన పుణ్యమూర్తి పినపోతు గజేంద్రుడు జన్మస్థలం తూర్పుగోదావరి జిల్లా, ఆత్రేయపురం మండలం, వాడపల్లి గ్రామంలో జన్మించాడు. అగ్నికులక్షత్రియ సామాజికవర్గానికి చెందినవాడు,రఘుకుల గోత్రిజ్ఞులు. పినపోతు గజేంద్రుడు నౌకావ్యాపారి, చాలా ఓడలకు అధిపతిగా ఉండేవాడు. ఒకసారి తుఫాను సభవించగా అతని ఓడలన్నీ సముద్రగర్భంలో అదృశ్యమయ్యాయి. తన ఓడలు సురక్షితంగా ఒడ్డుకు చేరితే నదీ గర్భంలో ఉన్న నిన్ను పైకి తీయించి, గట్టున ప్రతిష్ఠించి, గుడి కట్టిస్తానని గజేంద్రుడు మొక్కుకున్నాడు. తుఫాను వెలిశాక, ఓడలు భద్రంగా ఒడ్డుకు చేరాయి. స్వామికిచ్చిన మాట ప్రకారం అ గజేంద్రుడు ఇప్పుడున్న చోట స్వామివారిని ప్రతిష్ఠించి ఆలయం కట్టించాడు. పురాణ కథ ప్రకారం వాడపల్లిగా మారింది. 1700 సంవత్సరంలో పినపోతు గజేంద్రుడు గారు నౌకల ద్వారా అనేక దేశాలకు ఎగుమతులు దిగుమతులు చేసి గొప్ప సంపన్నులు అయినారు. 1759 వ సంవత్సరంలో వాడపల్లి శ్రీ వెంకటేశ్వర స్వామి వారి ఆలయాన్ని నిర్మించి దూప దీప నైవేద్యాలకు 275 ఎకరాల భూమిని వజ్రవైఢూర్యాలను విరాళంగా ఇచ్చారు భక్త శిఖామణిగా పేరు పొందారు.
