Bojjanna Konda, located in the peaceful village of Sankaram near Anakapalle, is one of the oldest surviving Buddhist sites in South India, dating back to the 3rd century BCE. What makes this place extraordinary is that three major Buddhist traditions—Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana—flourished here together, something extremely rare in history. For centuries, monks lived, meditated, carved stupas, and taught here. The twin hills—Bojjanna Konda and Lingalakonda—were once buzzing monastic universities filled with cave cells, multi-layered stupas, and rock-cut prayer halls. Pilgrims from Sri Lanka, Southeast Asia, and the rest of India are believed to have visited this sacred location. After nearly 1,500 years of continuous Buddhist activity, the entire site suddenly declined between the 7th–9th century CE. No clear records explain why. Some theories include: A massive volcanic eruption near the region, A powerful earthquake altering the landscape, Decline of Buddhism in South India, Monks migrating to newer centres. When the site became deserted, the hills slowly buried themselves under soil, forests, and time. For thousands of years, villagers believed the hill to be just a natural mound—until 1880, when a British survey accidentally uncovered stone relics. This led to a full archaeological excavation, revealing stupas, coins, seals, and meditation caves hidden for centuries. Today, Bojjanna Konda stands as a rare reminder of a lost Buddhist world that once shaped the spiritual history of the Deccan region.
